As far as DC films go, the next few years are going to be incredibly interesting. The post-Justice League landscape is full of potential, but that film's less-than-stellar box office shows that some regrouping is needed. Now, it looks like Warner Bros. may have finally found its next major project, as new rumors are now indicating that the Birds of Prey solo movie could end up becoming the next DC film to get greenlighted.
We hope you're ready to get back into action in Gotham City, because it seems that Warner Bros. and DC may be looking to another member of The Bat Family for their next project. Per The Wrap, these rumors suggest that that studio is very pleased with the most recent script draft submitted by screenwriter Christina Hodson, and the studio is currently on the hunt for a director. Once a director has been formally locked into place to work with Hodson's script, then the Birds of Prey movie can make the jump from development to the pre-production stage.
Birds of Prey is still incredibly early in the development process, but this news seems encouraging nonetheless. If Warner Bros. is excited about the script as rumors have indicated, then it's entirely possible that we could have a much-needed winner on our hands. Moreover, the prospect returning to Gotham City for a story that doesn't focus on Batman could allow the director (whoever it ends up being) to try something new and exciting with the crime-ridden locale.
For those of you who are less familiar with the DC world, the Birds of Prey team is a trio of female vigilantes who operate out of Gotham City. Membership on the team has varied over the years, but the three most iconic and familiar members of the group are Batgirl (who is also getting her own solo movie written by Christina Hodson), Black Canary, and The Huntress. They handle grounded, street-level operations in Gotham, and they often find themselves in battle with the Gotham City Sirens -- which typically consists of Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn.
Of course, while it's intriguing to finally have a better sense of where DC wants to go next, there are still plenty of other known projects worth looking out for ahead of Birds of Prey. Specifically, Aquaman will debut later this year on December 21, and 2019 will see the premieres of Shazam! on April 5, followed by Wonder Woman 2 on November 1.
