Late release date changes are rarely a good sign. Essentially, when it happens there is a strong suggestion that the distributor got cold feet due to negative circumstances - and that can include the quality of the "finished" product. Obviously it's a case by case basis, but now a lot of eyes are on the drama City of Lies, which has been pulled from the calendar just a few weeks before its scheduled release.
Per Entertainment Weekly, the film was originally supposed to come out on September 7th, but now those plans have been nixed. Directed by Brad Furman and starring Forest Whitaker and Johnny Depp, the feature now has an unclear future, as Global Road has not yet announced what their next step will be. According to the magazine, the studio did not immediately respond with a comment on the story.
Based on the true story and the book by Randall Sullivan, City of Lies is set in Los Angeles and follows the investigation trying to uncover the murderer of famed rapper Notorious B.I.G. Forest Whitaker plays journalist Jack Jackson in the movie, while Johnny Depp portrays L.A.P.D. Detective Russell Poole. They wind up combining resources while hunting for the rapper's killer - though it's well known the case was never completed.
The film launched its first trailer back in May, so even if we don't get to see City of Lies up on the big screen in the next few months, at the very least we do have some footage from the movie, proving its existence:
Film fans have a busy fall ahead, with a number of intensely-anticipated features from fantastic filmmakers and performers - so it may ultimately be a serious challenge for City of Lies to find an appropriate weekend for release going forward (particularly if there are last minute changes that need to be made before its deemed ready for theaters).
